As mentioned, standard P pickups should function fine- though the misalignment of the poles under the strings might bother some people. In that case probably the best off the shelf option I know of would be a pickup like the Wilde (Bill Lawrence) P46: P-46Which will be capable of classic tones and is less visually specific ... ... more

I love the Wilde P-46. To my ears, it nails the 'classic P', sound with possibly a little more clarity. I feel that little extra clarity pays off if you want a more overdriven/distorted tone. And I don't think you can beat the price, currently $72, for a hand made pickup made by the family/trusted friends of a pioneer in ... ... more

6 String Fixed Guitar Bridge This is the one I'm getting. It's string through the body & the dimensions of the holes say .156. You may find issues with the middle 2 strings with the P pickup as they will both be sitting adjacent to the magnetic fields of both P coils coils with your tight spacing unless you make the P route so that the halves of the P have less overlap than is normal. I don't know what 'Fender tone' is per se as Fender uses and has used a wide variety of pickups in their basses over their history that must all be different in some regard. But for a good 'P' tone, IMHO it's part pickup, part strings, part amp/signal path, and a good percentage technique. In the blues and blues rock things ... ... more

I just put a Wilde p46 in a P bass knock off with flats in BEAD. I'm seriously impressed with the clear low end and the tight attack. Outstanding sound at a very competitive price. Just put a Wilde p46 in a P bass knock-off wearing flats. I don't know if it's what you are looking for. But it's not too hot and not too wimpy. I had an old Peavey T-40 I converted to 5 strings. Work consisted of. 1. boring and fitting 5th tuner. 2.replacing the nut. 3. removing the bridge saddles and replacing them with mono saddles.
